What is the Recreational Trails Program? The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is a Federal-aid assistance program to help States provide and maintain recreational trails for both motorized and non motorized recreational trail use. The program provides funding for all kinds of recreational trail uses, such as pedestrian uses (hiking, running, wheelchair use), bicycling, in-line skating, equestrian use, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, off-road motorcycling, all-terrain vehicle riding, four-wheel driving, or using other off-road motorized vehicles. Each state develops its own procedures to solicit projects from project sponsors, and to select projects for funding, in response to recreational trail needs within the State. Who administers the Recreational Trails Program? Nevada State Parks administers the RTP in Nevada. Each year the Federal Highway Administration distributes funds to each state based on gasoline tax revenue from registered off-road vehicles in the state. In FY 2008, Nevada received approximately 0.6% of the total apportionment or $1,106,141. Nevada State Parks is allowed to use 7% of the total apportioned funds for administration; this funding enables Nevada State Parks to staff one full-time position to manage the RTP in Nevada. The amount to be received in 2009 will be announced in fall of 2008.
